Dean Smith has this message to Aston Villa fans after Halloween horror show against West Ham – Birmingham Live

Dean Smith fully believes he can turn it around at Aston Villa after their fourth defeat on the bounce at the hands of West Ham.

Goals from Ben Johnson, Declan Rice, Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen poured even more misery on Smith’s men to take Villa’s tally to 12 goals shipped from their last four games at a rate of one every half an hour.

Villa are now just three points above the drop zone having lost their sixth game from 10 this season.

BirminghamLive asked Smith what his message would be for supporters given Villa’s horrific run of form.

He told fans: “We have a squad capable of doing better than we are. There are reasons why we’ve had the results we’ve had.

“We’ve had some injuries but the perception probably outside the football club is very different to what it is at Bodymoor Heath. The players have a great belief in what they’re doing and what we’re doing. We will turn this around and get better. I’m confident (we’ll turn this around), of course.”

Ollie Watkins’ equaliser was just Villa’s third first-half goal this season as Smith lamented his side’s start in their 4-1 defeat with Johnson putting the visitors ahead after seven minutes.

Quizzed on why his side are slow starters, Smith replied: “It was only the first five or ten minutes today, then it was the fact JJ got injured so early in the game so we had to make an early change.

“Listen, when you’ve lost three on the spin now four on the spin, there’s always going to be that anxiety amongst the players and supporters.

“We grew into that game after 15 minutes and both the players and fans responded.”
